This is apparently old news to regular DesignBoom readers, but when I saw it today on Flavorwire’s list of Presents for Your Valentine That Don’t Suck, it was enough to almost make me J in my P’s. It’s a prototype for a “color picker” pen — a real life Photoshop eyedropper tool that lets you draw in the color of any actual objects you choose. Korean designer Jinsu Park is the mastermind behind all of this, and if he can actually make the color picker a reality, he will one day be a very rich man. Gregory’s Got a Groupie has a sneak peek at the new collection from New Zealand footwear label ToBe. New Zealand’s been getting more respect lately from a style standpoint, with labels like Stolen Girlfriends Club and Cassius Eyewear gaining fans worldwide, and up-and-comers like the difficult-to-Google For Good giving the island nation some more indie cred.
ToBe fits right in with these casual kicks in black and white. I’m partial to the white hi-top, with a bright blue sole — simple, clean, with enough kick to give it some extra style points. Check out some more of the collection after the jump.

Dwell Magazine teaches its readership to be at home in the modern world, accompanied by beautifully-shot, if strangely emotionally detached, photos of grandiose homes, elaborate backyards, unconventional furniture and other stuff white people like. Here to push it over the edge of self-parody: Unhappy Hipsters, a Tumblr with captions like the one above that will make you laugh out loud. Who knows how long it will remain active before Dwell steps in to take it down, so enjoy it while it lasts. One of the things that I’ve always hated about the anonymity the internet affords is how easy it is for bloggers and commenters to fall back on snark for snark’s sake, nitpicking, name-calling, bitching, moaning and the like. This is not by any stretch of the imagination a profound observation on my part — there are entire books devoted to the topic, and blogs that have done very well peddling this sort of discourse. I read those blogs and I’m guilty of a good amount of sarcasm, cheap-shots and cynicism myself.
There’s also a very specific type of writing that seems to plague a lot of style bloggers, probably stemming from the cooler-than-thou attitude that is so prevalent among fashion snobs. You can see it on blogs telling people what not to wear, what unfortunate, everyday people are doing wrong, why this label is better than that, why this site sucks and this boutique is over, why tucking your pants into boots is awesome or lame, why scarves are cool or Americana is out.
Quite frankly, it’s exhausting. And it undermines the point of developing a sense of personal style, which by definition is an individualized, unique manifestation of your own perspective and opinions.
From here on out, I’m adopting a more positive stance. I haven’t been too bad on here, but for a blog that’s supposed to just be a collection of things I like, there has been a little too much negativity for my taste. So, now, I’ve got a new attitude: if I like it, it’s going on here. If I’m on the fence, there’s a way to talk about things without spiraling into a snark attack. And if I hate it, I just won’t post it. That sounds to me like it would be more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Now, having said that, there are a few things I need to get off my chest.

After a “25 Most Stylish Men in the World 2010″ feature that was decidedly meh, GQ has really upped the ante on street style with their A+ man-on-the-scene portfolio from Paris and Milan by photographer Tommy Ton. Sure, it helps that Ton is taking photos on the streets where many of arguably the most stylish men — or at least those most invested in style — are congregating, but his keen eye for detail puts that other street photographer (the one with the homeless fetish) to shame. Pelayo Diaz Zapico and his trademark kilt even make a cameo. And with snapshots this carefully observed, I’m not mad at the in-house self-love thrown in the mix, either.

I’ve long admired Paul Smith for his mastery of some of my favorite aspects of contemporary menswear: splashes of bold color, pattern mixing, and the combination of youthful, rebellious flourishes with classic pieces. It’s all very British and rakish and punkish. So, needless to say, I geeked out over the FW10 collection, which had all of these elements I love and more. Seriously, if I could afford to eat, drink and furnish my wardrobe primarily in Paul Smith, I’d be rather content.
The collection has some killer suits, including a skinny electric blue number, knitwear that I haven’t seen from Paul Smith in past seasons, and enough plaid blazers to satisfy the somewhat irrational attraction I have toward such things. Naturally, there are some great tweeds and there’s a pretty badass leather jacket, too. Pairing boots with slim-cut trousers is on-trend for fall, and bringing in some sneakers is a nice nod to the high-low mixing that is still both an appealing and realistic style option for many consumers. While incorporating color is an area where Paul Smith always really shines, the collection integrates a muted palette well, too, layering on contrasting fabric to keep things interesting. The WSJ’s Speakeasy today posted about a previously unreleased Whitney Houston track from 1985. But more striking for me than the unpolished recording from a pop icon-in-the-making is the accompanying photo. Not only is it a bit jarring to see Houston so fresh-faced and young in light of the unfortunate turn her life and career took in the 2000′s, but it’s kind of funny how she’s dressed exactly like a lot of girls today. Place her as is in the East Village, and she wouldn’t even get a second look. Unless she started screaming.
